#1 KNOW WHAT YOU WANT.

Well first things first, we need you to do some self work. WHAT?! Why do I Have to do any work? I just want someone to take photos of me and feel loved, valid and appreciated again.

WE KNOW, and we GOT you.

AND, That’s what I will do. This is my job, this is what I do for a living and damn it I love doing it. You are going to be with me from that first moment you hit send on your email to inquire with me, until well, hopefully forever. That’s hours of time with someone so let’s make sure it’s a good fit.

These types of sessions are here to make you feel that part of you that you know is there but you maybe you miss. it. Maybe you’ve had kids and just need some me time, maybe you’ve recently separated from a partner and need a fresh outlook on yourself, and maybe you LOVE your damn self and just want to show it off to the world. These are all VALID reason for a session, and there’s so many more reasons too.

With that, you need to look for someone that make you feel and look how you want in photos. Do you want someone who will give you tough love when you need it? Do you need someone who’s really good at posing? Do you like the look of Light and Airy Photos or Sulty and Dark? What are some photos you’ve seen of other amazing humans that you saw and you were like OH, THAT, I LIKE THAT.

The most important thing for YOU is that your comfortable with who you’re working with. All photographers are different but knowing how you want to see yourself in photos is the first step in finding a good fit for a boudoir photographer.

#2 Are they inclusive?

Well, what do you mean?

Do you see someone that represents you in their work?

What’s important to you? Is it important to you that your photographer be LGBTQIA2 friendly? Do you see multiple body types portrayed in their work? Do Black Lives Matter to them? All of the above should be true and shown.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS

If you don’t see someone who looks like you or could be you, would you still want to give them a chance and work with them? To some that’s not the biggest deal breaker, and for others it may be so it’s something to keep in mind! IF the questions above are important to you, don’t be afraid to ask them! And ask more questions! A photographer you should work with should be able to answer those questions without hesitation and be able to provide the same client experience to ALL bodies in their work.

#3 What’s their process?

This is probably your first time trying to book a boudoir session, but you may be thinking I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO ASK! So, here’s some questions you can ask about their process!

-When would I be able to book a session?

Some photographers are booked out months or a year in advance, so don’t always assume they will be available next week.

-How long does it usually take for me to receive the photos?

This will vary depending on what they offer for their session, but it’s good to ask so you know and have that expectation set!\ for yourself.

-What’s a typical session look like from start to finish?

How would you know if you have never had a session before so feel free to ask so you know how a session goes from start to finish.

-How long does a typical session last?

Again varies on each photographers process, some may be an hour or two or 4-5 if they offer same day session.

-Do you have a client closet? Or what type of lingerie I should look for?

This is such a good question to ask before your session! We all have such DIFFERENT bodies for good reason so lingerie looks so different on us all and you should be a to ask for what you can bring or what you should wear to a session.

-How long do products usually take to come in after my session?

I ALWAYS want my clients to have products, digital sit in a folder and you don’t get to see the photos every day that you SLAYED, but some people only want digital and that’s okay too! But ask what your photographer offers!

-What happens with my image files after the session? Do you use them in your marketing?

Do they have a model release that they have you sign to share your photos? Can you not have them share your photos if you don’t want to? Privacy is really important to a lot of clients and should be respected! At the same time, if you agree to share the photos that is EXTREMELY helpful for any boudoir photographer! If you had an amazing experience, wouldn’t you want others to have the same!

#4 What’s their editing process like?

I personally believe less editing is more, because i want YOU to see YOU in your photos. My rule of thumb is if it will be gone in two weeks (pimples, a burn, etc) I will remove it but I will NOT Photoshop your body!

But this is something really important to ask your photographer, because what YOU want and what you are okay with is what matters. This is YOUR body and you need to be happy with the final photos. Setting expectations is EXTREMELY important so ask so you are both on the same page.

#5 What’s their WHY?

I wish people asked their photographers this more because it is SO IMPORTANT! Why did they get into boudoir / intimate portrait photography? Why is this genre so important to them. The answer to this may just be what you need to hear to book your session! We all usually have an extremely important why as to what got us started and drives us to work with humans across the board to get them photos that last a lifetime.

My why is being able to survive so much trauma in my life from sexual abuse, to cancer to even body image issues. Realizing the beauty in my own body, how it keeps me alive and keeps me going through the roughest times in my life has taught me to celebrate it, JUST how it is. No matter the size, shape or mental state I get to celebrate with other humans before, during and after a session and nothing fills my soul more. Just be prepared for me to seriously SCREAM in excitement while showing you images from your session <3

Don’t be scared to have a voice and ask all the questions until you are 1000% comfortable and safe. YouR voice matters!
